A 630 sq ft Stanwood patio under a clear-roof pergola, plus two steps, coated in Smoke flake polyurea in one day in August 2025.

A covered patio only works if the floor under it holds up. This Stanwood homeowner had a big backyard slab under a black aluminum pergola with a clear polycarbonate roof and string lights. The structure was sharp. The concrete under it was plain grey, with a few stains and the usual weathering from Northwest seasons.
In August 2025 our crew put down a patio floor coating in Stanwood: 630 square feet of Certified Penntek polyurea in Smoke flake, plus the two steps up to the sliding door. One install day, and the patio now looks as finished as the pergola above it.
The free consultation was in July 2025. The moisture meter read 3.7% on the slab, and the concrete was in OK condition: no major cracks, just a worn, porous surface. We test every slab before quoting, outdoor ones included, because a covered patio still sits on ground that stays wet half the year.
The shape mattered too. Rounded corners, a gravel border, a side path along a stone planter wall, and the steps by the door. Each edge needs clean grinding and a crisp finish.
It was a warm 70°F day, good weather for outdoor work.
The rounded corners and the gravel border stayed clean. More outdoor projects are on our patio coating page.
Smoke Evolution is a bold mix of black, charcoal, grey and white chips. With the black pergola posts and grey siding, it ties the whole patio together. The bigger contrast in the chips also hides dirt, pollen and leaf bits that blow in from the yard.
Under a clear roof the floor gets plenty of daylight. That brings us to the next point.
A polycarbonate roof keeps rain off, but light still comes through. Typical epoxy yellows in sunlight, and on a dark flake that shows fast. The Penntek topcoat has FadeLock™, tested in a 16-hour QUV accelerated UV test, so it won't yellow or amber. The flake itself is UV stable. Our post on UV damage and coated floors explains why it matters even in our cloudy region.
Outdoor slabs also move through freeze-thaw. The pure polyurea basecoat is flexible, so it moves with the concrete. See it in the Penntek Stretch Test. And the bond is chemical, over 1,300 PSI, so the coating stays put. Every floor carries a limited lifetime warranty backed by Penntek.
Stanwood sits near the mouth of the Stillaguamish River, with open farmland and long, wet winters. Backyard concrete here deals with rain, moss and mud tracked in from the lawn. A sealed, non-porous patio rinses clean with a hose.
See our page on patio and garage floor coatings in Stanwood, or look at a garage floor we coated just across the bridge on Camano Island.
Yes. The two steps at this Stanwood patio got the same grind, basecoat, flake and topcoat as the slab, so the whole space matches.
The full flake broadcast leaves a light texture under the topcoat, which helps underfoot. Wet leaves or moss on any surface can still be slick, so keep it rinsed. Our post on whether coated floors are slippery covers it in more detail.
No. We coat open patios too. FadeLock™ UV stability in the topcoat is made for sun exposure, and the flexible basecoat handles rain and freeze-thaw.
