Paint Splatter, Hairline Cracks and a New Slate Stone Floor in Redmond

A newly drywalled Redmond garage with paint drips and hairline cracks got crack repair and a Slate Stone flake polyurea floor in September 2026.

Fresh drywall makes a garage look almost done. Then you look down. This Redmond garage had brand new grey walls and a slab covered in drywall mud, paint drips and old splatter, with a web of hairline cracks running through it. The water heater closet in the corner was the same story.

In September 2026 Cascade's crew finished the room from the floor up with a garage floor coating in Redmond made from Certified Penntek polyurea in Slate Stone flake. Every crack was repaired first, and the closet floor got the same finish as the main garage.

What the slab looked like in August

The free consultation came in early August 2026. We took moisture readings in two spots, 4.4% and 4.3%, and looked closely at the surface. Three things stood out:

  • Construction mess. Joint compound, paint drips and primer overspray stuck to the concrete.
  • Cracks. Several long hairline cracks branching across the slab, plus a saw-cut control joint.
  • Tight corners. A narrow closet around the water heater with bare concrete and pipes.

None of that is unusual after a remodel. It just has to be dealt with before any coating goes down.

Prep first, then the coating

  1. Industrial diamond grinding took off the paint, the mud and the weak top layer of the slab. Then a full vacuum.
  2. Every crack was traced, opened and filled with Penntek Mender crack repair. In the photos you can see the white lines of filler tracking each one across the floor.
  3. Pure polyurea basecoat, over 99% solids.
  4. Full broadcast of Slate Stone flake, scraped and collected.
  5. Polyaspartic topcoat with FadeLock™ UV stability.

The crack repair is the step people skip on DIY jobs, and it is the one that shows later. Fill the cracks, and the coating has a solid surface to bond to.

Why Slate Stone fits a grey room

Slate Stone Evolution mixes charcoal, mid grey and white chips. Against the new grey walls and the black garage door it looks deliberate, like the floor was picked to match the paint. The busy pattern also hides the repaired crack lines completely.

Why the cracks should stay hidden

Concrete keeps moving after it cracks. A rigid coating like typical epoxy often splits along the same line within a few years. Penntek's polyurea basecoat is flexible and moves with the slab through temperature swings and freeze-thaw. It also bonds chemically to the concrete at over 1,300 PSI. Watch the Penntek Stretch Test to see the flexibility for yourself.

Our post on DIY vs professional concrete coating is a fair look at both options if you are weighing a kit.

New garages and remodels in Redmond

In Redmond's wet months the garage works as a second mudroom, which is a good reason to finish it properly. Leave the floor for last. Coat it after the messy trades are gone and it stays clean.

Crack and cleanup FAQ

Can you get paint and drywall mud off concrete before coating?

Yes. Diamond grinding removes paint, joint compound and primer along with the top layer of the slab. That leaves clean, open concrete for the basecoat to bond with.

Do hairline cracks come back through a polyurea floor?

We fill every crack with Penntek Mender crack repair before coating. The flexible polyurea basecoat then moves with the slab, so the repair stays covered instead of splitting open.

How soon can I use my garage again?

The crew will tell you the exact walk-on and parking times before they leave. They depend on the temperature and humidity on install day.
