A Kenmore Woodworker's Garage Gets a Tidal Wave Flake Floor

A cracked, stained Kenmore garage that doubles as a woodshop, coated in Tidal Wave flake with Certified Penntek polyurea in one October day.

Kenmore workshop garage with a tool wall and Tidal Wave flake polyurea floor

This Kenmore garage is a woodworker's shop first and a parking spot second. A bandsaw, a planer and rolling tool carts fill one side. A tool wall and pegboard cover the back, and a set of wood steps leads into the house. The concrete underneath had taken years of that work: a long crack across the middle, oil and finish stains near the wall, and sawdust ground into every pore.

In October 2025 this Kenmore homeowner had Cascade install a garage floor coating with Certified Penntek polyurea in Tidal Wave flake. The shop moved out in the morning and the new floor was done by the end of the day.

A working slab

The free consultation was in early October 2025, with the shop still set up. The crew put a moisture meter down in a few spots, including right next to the crack, where it read 4.1%. A scratch test checked hardness. Every slab gets these tests before a quote.

What the slab showed:

  • A crack running across the floor and branching near the garage door.
  • Dark stains along the back wall from oil, finish and spills.
  • A stem wall around the edges with dirt and stains packed into the joint.

Shop out, floor in, one day

Installation was on October 23, 2025. The equipment rolled out and the crew went through the steps:

  1. Industrial diamond grinding, edges and stem wall included, then vacuuming.
  2. Penntek Mender crack repair in the crack and its branches.
  3. Pure polyurea basecoat, over 99% solids, carried up the base of the stem wall.
  4. Full broadcast of Tidal Wave flake, scraped and collected.
  5. Polyaspartic topcoat with FadeLock™ UV stability.

The coating wraps the stem wall corners and stops clean at the wood steps, so the whole shop has a finished edge.

Tidal Wave for a shop

Tidal Wave is a grey, white and black flake blend with a hint of blue-grey. For a shop, the busy pattern is a feature. Sawdust, small offcuts and the odd drip of finish blend in until the next sweep. The light tone also brightens the room, which helps when you are lining up a cut.

What a woodshop needs from a floor

Shop floors take hits. Clamps fall, a chisel slips, a heavy machine gets rolled across the room. A few things make this floor a good match:

  • Impact. The Penntek Hammer Test shows how the coating handles a direct strike.
  • Bond. The basecoat forms a chemical bond with the concrete at over 1,300 PSI. Before the coating comes up, the concrete will come up.
  • Cleanup. The non-porous topcoat means oil, stain and glue squeeze-out wipe off instead of soaking in.

Our post on workshop, gym and multi-use garages has more ideas for spaces that do double duty. The floor is registered under Penntek's limited lifetime warranty.

Shop and garage floors in Kenmore

Kenmore sits at the north end of Lake Washington, and garages here deal with damp falls and cold snaps. A slab that cracks across the middle has usually moved with the seasons, so the flexible Penntek basecoat earns its keep. Workshop garage FAQ

Will rolling heavy tools scratch the floor?

The flake and polyaspartic topcoat take normal shop traffic well, and the pattern hides light wear. For very heavy machines, rubber casters or a mat under fixed equipment is a good idea on any floor.

Where do my tools go during the install?

Out of the garage for the day. The floor has to be clear wall to wall for grinding and coating. The crew tells you when you can move tools back in.

Can finish and glue spills be cleaned off?

The topcoat is non-porous, so most spills wipe up. Clean them while fresh, the same as on any finished floor.
