What It Took to Coat a Packed North Bend Garage in Slate Stone

A packed North Bend garage with oil stains, a furnace and wood wainscot, cleared and coated in Slate Stone flake Penntek polyurea in September 2026.

When we first walked into this North Bend garage in late July 2026, you could barely see the floor. A car on one side. A fridge, a riding mower, chainsaws, golf clubs, a stack of boxes and an armchair on the other. Where the concrete did show, it had oil stains, tire marks and a dull grey film from years of use.

By early September the room was cleared, ground and coated. This homeowner now has a garage floor coating in North Bend made with Certified Penntek polyurea in Slate Stone flake, running from the door to the wood wainscot along the back wall.

Testing a slab you can't see

A full garage doesn't stop a consult. We found open spots between the stored gear and took moisture readings in several places. They included 5.4% and 4.5%. Every slab gets tested before we quote, because a reading tells us whether the job needs our two-layer moisture barrier system.

We also looked at the details that change an install: a furnace standing on the slab, a steel support post, a raised concrete edge at one side and wood wainscot that had to be protected during grinding.

Clearing out and coating

Emptying the garage is the homeowner's part, and in a space this full it is real work. Once it was clear, the crew set up in the driveway and went to work:

  1. Industrial diamond grinding across the whole slab, with the wainscot taped off, then a full vacuum.
  2. Crack repair anywhere the grind opened up a line.
  3. Pure polyurea basecoat, over 99% solids, with a silane adhesion promoter for a chemical bond.
  4. Slate Stone flake broadcast to full coverage, including around the post and the furnace.
  5. Scrape and collect the loose flake.
  6. Polyaspartic topcoat with FadeLock™ UV stability.

Slate Stone next to warm wood

Slate Stone Evolution mixes grey, white and black chips. Against the dark stained wainscot it looks cool and clean, and it suits the log and stone look of the house outside. It also hides the sawdust, grass clippings and bar oil that come with a garage full of yard equipment.

Built to outlast the gear on it

Mowers, chainsaws and a car all leave drips. The non-porous topcoat keeps oil and gas on the surface. The basecoat's bond to the concrete is over 1,300 PSI. Before the coating comes up, the concrete will come up, as the Penntek Hammer Test shows. Our post on how long garage floor coatings last in the Pacific Northwest covers the long view.

North Bend and the upper valley

North Bend is mountain country inside commuting range of Seattle, with Mount Si overhead and Snoqualmie Pass up the road. A lot of garages here store more than cars, and they take in rain, snowmelt and road salt. Packed garage FAQ

Do I have to empty my garage before the consult?

No. We only need a few open spots to test moisture and hardness. The garage has to be fully cleared before install day.

Can you coat around a furnace or a support post?

Yes. The crew grinds and coats right up to fixed equipment and posts, so the flake runs continuously around them.

Will chainsaw bar oil or mower gas stain the floor?

The polyaspartic topcoat is non-porous and resists oil, gas and grease. Wipe spills up when you see them and the floor stays clean.
