A Shaded Kirkland Patio Gets a Fieldstone Polyurea Finish

A damp, leaf-covered Kirkland back patio became a 200 sq ft Fieldstone flake floor with Certified Penntek polyurea, installed in one day.

Some patios never get a chance to dry out. This one sits in the shade behind a Kirkland home, tucked between a block retaining wall, a cedar fence and a sliding glass door. Leaves and needles drift in every fall, the corners stay damp, and the bare concrete had gone grey and blotchy with ground-in dirt. The homeowner wanted a patio that looked finished and could be hosed off in a minute.

In October 2026 our crew put down a patio coating in Kirkland with Certified Penntek polyurea in Fieldstone flake. 200 square feet, one day, and a surface that now sheds water and debris instead of soaking them up.

What we found at the September consult

The free consultation happened in September 2026. Two quick tests tell us most of what we need to know about a slab.

The concrete came in at fair condition. No major cracks, but plenty of staining, surface wear and organic grime, along with a control joint, a floor drain near the door and edges that met soil and planting beds. On install day the slab was 57°F with air at 66°F and 71% humidity. We log those numbers on every job because they go on the Penntek warranty registration.

How the patio came together in one day

The drain stayed clear and the control joint was kept as a clean line through the finished floor. You can read more about how we handle patio floor coatings on our project page.

Why Fieldstone works on a shaded patio

Fieldstone Enviroflake is a warm, earthy blend. Next to the grey-green siding and the stone retaining wall it reads like it belongs there, not like a garage floor that wandered outside. The 1/4 inch flake also does a good job of hiding the pollen, leaf litter and footprints a back patio collects between rinses.

The flake broadcast leaves a bit of texture under the topcoat, which helps underfoot when the surface is wet.

Built for a slab that lives outdoors

Outdoor concrete moves. It warms up, cools down and goes through freeze-thaw cycles every winter. A brittle coating can crack along with it. The Penntek basecoat is flexible, so it moves with the slab instead of fighting it. Watch the Penntek Stretch Test to see what that looks like.

Sun is the other problem. Typical epoxy yellows and ambers in UV light. FadeLock™ in the topcoat passed a 16-hour QUV accelerated UV test, and the flake itself is UV stable, so Fieldstone should look like Fieldstone for years.

The bond matters most. Over 1,300 PSI bond strength means that before the coating comes up, the concrete will come up. Every floor carries a limited lifetime warranty backed by Penntek, the manufacturer.

Patio coatings in Kirkland

Kirkland sits on the east shore of Lake Washington, and a lot of its backyards are shaded by big evergreens. That means slow drying, moss and wet winters. Moisture testing is the step that keeps a coating from failing on a damp slab, which is why we do it at every consult. Our guide on moisture in concrete explains why.

We coat garages, patios and walkways all over town. See our concrete coatings in Kirkland page, or look at another Kirkland project we finished in Slate Stone.

Patio questions we hear in Kirkland

Can you coat a shaded patio that stays damp?

Often, yes. We test moisture at the free consultation before we promise anything. If a slab needs it, we have a two-layer moisture barrier system that goes down before the basecoat.

Will leaves and moss stain the coating?

The polyaspartic topcoat is non-porous, so leaves, dirt and moss sit on the surface instead of soaking in. A hose or a push broom handles most of it.

Is polyurea a good choice for outdoor concrete?

Yes. The basecoat flexes with freeze-thaw movement, and the topcoat holds its color in sunlight. Typical epoxy is rigid and tends to yellow outdoors, which is why we install Penntek polyurea instead.
